There’s nothing you can do about aging, and as you age your skin ages with you. One of the worst causes of skin ageing is excessive sun damage from overexposure to UV in the Sun’s rays. Can you help prevent and even reverse skin sun damage?
Sunburn, or just too much time out in the sun, is just terrible to your skin. Along with smoking excessive exposure to the ultraviolet rays of the sun can be one of the worst things you can do to ensure that you show your age faster.
The rays of the sun can be seriously damaging. At worst it is now known that one of the implications of sunburn can be skin cancer which can lead to your death. Many people are aware of the risk of skin cancer but are less aware that exposure to the sun can, over time, lead to premature skin ageing. This is technically called photo-aging.
Of course there are always things you can do to help prevent excessive exposure to ultraviolet radiation and therefore lower the incidence of skin sun damage. Most important is to remember to stay out of direct sunlight during the middle of the day, particularly during summer. If you do need to go outdoors in the middle of the day for any extended period of time then wear a hat a broad brim together with a long sleeved shirt. However these are not complete answers. You can still get a burned face under a hat, for example from reflection off the water.
Then of course there are sunscreens. However it is now becoming more widely known that many sunscreens do not offer full protection from the different ultraviolet rays produced by the sun, in particular those can lead to serious skin sun damage problems such as cancer.
There are natural sunscreens available. Many of these are sourced from plants and will help naturally protect your skin from burning by acting as a natural sunscreen. However these can not only protect your skin from UV rays but, according to recent research, actually help reverse some photo-aging effects.
You may have heard of lycopene. It comes from tomatoes and modern science is starting to show that increasing your intake of lycopene may well have some very beneficial health effects. For example there is now evidence that more lycopene in your diet can help prevent prostate cancer in men and breast cancer in women. And there is also evidence that lycopene can help reverse the effects of photo-aging thereby reversing the effects of sun damage to skin.
As well as lycopene there are other naturally occurring ingredients that also offer some skin sun protection. Whilst you should not rely on these natural sunscreens alone for protection there is evidence that they will help increase your base level of natural protection.
Cutting edge science is starting to understand more about the mechanisms of photo-aging, one of the most damaging causes of premature ageing. And modern science is also starting to produce products that utilize the benefits inherent in these natural sunscreens.
An example is a new omega 3 supplement recently introduced to the market which includes lycopene as an active ingredient as well as other ingredients to increase your skin’s natural resistance to sunburn and to help reverse the effects of photo-aging. And of course omega 3 essential fatty acids are themselves known to be of a very similar chemical make up to the oil that is naturally produced in your skin and for this reason Omega3 fats are also very good to improved skin health.
If you’re interested in high quality skin care you need to understand the damaging effects of excessive exposure to sunlight, and that there are ways to help prevent this and also to reverse the effects of skin sun damage.
Science is producing answers to keeping skin healthier and looking better using natural ingredients such as lycopene and Omega3 fats.
