The AARP largely backs Democratic plans to overhaul the health insurance system. So Republicans are questioning the big nonprofit — and pointing to the $400 million a year it makes through its partnership with UnitedHealth, a big insurer that sells AARP-branded health-insurance policies to senior citizens.

Should Doctors Get Public Report Cards?

Health policy wonks love to talk about “paying for quality,” and giving patients more information. Front-line docs are often skeptical about how, exactly, that “quality” gets measured, and what information would be useful for patients.

Here’s the basic idea Harry Reid backed yesterday: Create a new, government-backed health insurance plan that would be offered to people who can’t get affordable health insurance through work, and allow individual states to decide whether to offer the plan.

Here’s the basic idea Harry Reid backed yesterday: Create a new, government-backed health insurance plan that would be offered to people who can’t get affordable health insurance through work, and allow individual states to decide whether to offer the plan. Liberal Dems are likely to vote for the plan. Olympia Snowe, the one Republican who voted for the Senate Finance health-care bill, has said she doesn’t like it

The anti aging skin care products and cosmetics industries are huge businesses, turning over billions of dollars a year. There are lots of US women looking for solutions to looking younger and looking good, and plenty of big companies that take advantage of this.

But that doesn’t mean that the products work well, and there are many big brand name anti-aging skin care products that do very little. There is no government regulation in the US requiring companies to demonstrate that their products work or that they even use safe ingredients.

As a result there are many anti aging skin care treatments available that don’t work, and contain suspect, or known to be dangerous ingredients.

But despite this they sell huge amounts of these products that advertise their ability to make you look younger. Everywhere you look you see products telling you they will make you younger and look great.

So how do you navigate through all the hype and choose a range of anti aging skin care treatments that actually work, and don’t contain dangerous ingredients?

This is how not to choose your anti aging products.

1. Don’t buy any skin care products that include fragrances in them. Now of course everyone likes to smell good, and the cosmetics companies pander to that, by adding fragrances to their products. Apply the cream and smell good and look young all at the same time.

But there’s 2 problems. Firstly the skin care cream you’re buying probably won’t do very much to make you look younger.

And secondly, fragrances are chemicals and not good to put on your skin. Same with perfumes, but with a perfume you just put a little dab here and there, with a skin care cream you apply it to a much wider area.

2. Don’t buy anti aging skin care creams with collagen in them. Now we all know that as we age our skin loses collagen, so surely we need collagen replaced to combat the sagging and wrinkling and lines that come with skin aging?

Well yes and no. We do need to replace the collagen, but collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the skin, so putting collagen in the bottle does nothing, other than making you feel good perhaps.

But you can increase the levels of collagen in the skin by stimulating the skin to produce more of it’s own collagen.

However remember, the big cosmetics and anti aging companies are in the business of selling their products. If they put collagen on the label people buy it. And if they put it in a fancy bottle and get a good looking celebrity to say how much younger they look using it, then it will sell.

So it may not do much, and it may have dangerous chemicals in it like fragrances, but it still sells like hot cakes.

That’s marketing.

Problem is, all this marketing is expensive. The good looking celebrity has to be paid, usually lots, the fancy bottles need to be purchased, and the advertising costs a bomb.

So although that anti-aging product is really just making you smell better and not much else it sells big time because people assume that if it costs that much it has to be good.

So there is 2 things to avoid when looking for a good anti aging skin care treatment. There’s more but this is getting long.

Does all this mean that you should give up on anti aging creams and products because they don’t work? Not at all. There are excellent anti aging products that work fine, produced from ingredients from plants that are safe to use.

But they aren’t made by the big name brands but by small niche companies that you’ve probably never heard of. They don’t spend on TV advertising which is why the products are moderately priced and why you’ve never heard of them.

But there’s no need to despair. I’ve told you about some of the things you need to avoid when buying anti-aging skin care products. And that there are excellent alternatives. Now it’s up to you. Find out more about natural skin care products on my website.

There’s a growing recognition that heart-attack risk rises for women after menopause — and that cardiovascular disease is the leading killer of U.S. women

Note to Middle-Aged Women: Your Heart-Attack Risk is Rising

We’re nearing the end of the year, and many people are already in open enrollment for next year’s health coverage, which means it is a great time to plan ahead for your 2010 drug expenditures. No, you can’t know every medication you are going to need, but if you are on a popular, patented maintenance drug such as Lipitor or Cozaar , you’ll be pleased to hear that their patents are expiring in 2010, opening the field for more-affordable U.S. generic versions

Here’s a reasonable idea: Create an accelerated process to approve new, potentially life-saving drugs — and build in post-approval requirements to make sure the drugs really work. The FDA put in place the first part in the early 1990s, but hasn’t been so good at the follow-up, according to a GAO report out today.

Have you ever given any thought to the reason why some skin care for wrinkles is so expensive, and yet does not seem to work half as well as it should? No! Well perhaps it is about time you did, there is a great deal of hype regarding skin products, so it is not necessarily the ingredients they use in these that cost the money.

The advertising campaigns that these large cosmetic houses use are unbelievably expensive, so in many instances the users of these products is not actually paying for the product, but they are paying for the glamorous advertising campaign on TV and in glossy magazines.

It is vital for all consumers to know that the more expensive a product is does not necessarily make it the best. I have tried so many expensive products and wondered why on earth I was not receiving the benefits they promised. Look at some of the stars they use to endorse these products, I can be pretty certain that they are being paid a high salary, but do they really use the products?

Improving the quality of your skin includes firming, toning, evening out discolorations, and reducing fine lines and bags under the eyes. If you find a product which can achieve all these results, you will have found a product which suites your own skin type. Regular use of the product will allow you to have a far more youthful appearance. When you look younger, you feel younger too.

The biggest problem is that there are so many different products available it is difficult to know where to make your choices. As with any product, a consumer must educate themselves regarding skin care for wrinkles. A wise purchase is generally a good purchase and if a skin product can do what it says it does, this is very valuable.

The other option is cosmetic surgery. There is no doubt that this multi-billion dollar industry has it merits. But only for the people who are willing to risk dangerous surgery to achieve the results they want. I am not one of those people and there are many others like me in the world.
